AAFRO's philosophy
AAFRO’s model of care is based on community restorative and healing practices that draw on a variety of traditional justice practices that promote collectivism rather than an individualist approach to everyday life, including Indigenous justice circles, the African philosophy of Ubuntu, and modern developments.
AAFRO’s Community Circle philosophy, based on Ubuntu and restorative practice, is built on human universality and traditional moral values of respect, integrity, togetherness, compassion, fairness, and dignity. AAFRO programs are designed to address community-wide issues by:

Project Background
The project falls under AAFRO Early Intervention and Education Programs.
The Early Intervention Program is Beat The Time (BTT). BTT is a school holiday program for children and young people aged 5–17, particularly those from families experiencing vulnerability and hardship. The program fosters fun, skill development, and a strong sense of belonging through culturally safe and evidence-based activities.
Beat The Time was a finalist at the 2024 Victorian Child Protection Awards.
BTT is embedded in the AAFRO Circles, which are a central hub for a range of programs offering wrap-around and culturally responsive support for children, young people, and families, including those involved in the justice system, to reach their full potential. The circles promote peace and coexistence using the AAFRO Model of Care.
The Education Program is Live2Learn Tutoring. Live2Learn has two streams: (1) an online tutoring service for primary and high school students from CALD African, newly arrived, and refugee backgrounds, as well as vulnerable families.
Eligibility: Students in Years 2–12 experiencing disadvantage or hardship. The program runs online and on Saturday mornings. Stream (2) comprises group workshop sessions based in schools and career expos.
The Support Worker will work on both programs and is expected to participate in other early intervention and education programs from time to time as assigned by the program manager.
Position Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a passionate, committed, and highly skilled Support Worker for children, young people, and families. The successful applicant will facilitate group sessions and one-on-one mentoring, engage with volunteers and partner agencies, and provide case management outside the school holidays. The Support Worker will work in the Beat The Time school holiday program, which offers a range of creative activities, including a safe space, a welcoming environment, arts and crafts, sport, educational activities, healthy eating, and excursions during the Victorian school holidays. The Support Worker is also expected to work in other education programs, such as Live2Learn Tutoring. The tutoring program is offered online and on Saturday mornings. The Support Worker facilitates sessions and coordinates between volunteers, students, and parents.
Aside from planning and facilitating BTT and Live2Learn Tutoring, the Support Worker will be required to work in other early intervention and education programs as assigned by the Program Manager, Team Leader, and Leadership Team.
Key Responsibility Areas
Beat The Time / Live2Learn Facilitator
As a staff member of the program, you will:
Plan and design age-appropriate activities for children and young people aged 5 to 16.
Identify locations suitable for Beat The Time activities and appropriate for young people and their families.
Work with parents, guardians, siblings, and mentors to help provide suitable activities for young people.
Engage with AAFRO partner agencies and reach out to community organisations interested in participating in the Beat The Time program.
Connect young people and their families to opportunities aligned with their needs and values to help them achieve positive outcomes.
Operate in a culturally responsive manner, ensuring that everyone’s culture is acknowledged, respected, valued, and welcomed when engaging with AAFRO programs.
Maintain a positive attitude towards all children, young people, families, volunteers, student placements, partner organisations, sponsors, subcontractors, and businesses.
Continue one-on-one mentorship, group sessions, and case management with young people outside the school holiday period.
Participate in and facilitate the weekend Live2Learn AAFRO education program outside the Beat The Time holiday program.
Ensure accurate record-keeping, professionalism, and confidentiality at all times in accordance with relevant policies and procedures.
Coordinate with young people, families, and partners regarding Beat The Time, and
Promote and support AAFRO Live2Learn both on weekends and in schools.
Information and Data Management
Assist with conducting needs analysis, end-of-program surveys, focus groups, and end-of-program meetings to feed into AAFRO’s continuous improvement cycle.
Develop and maintain electronic and paper-based program documentation and case notes, ensuring the information complies with the Privacy Act, is archived, and is readily retrievable.
Stakeholder engagement
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Work collaboratively with key stakeholders to achieve program and AAFRO objectives.
Ensure all internal and external communications are effective, appropriate, and timely.
Help promote AAFRO programs and recruit new volunteers.

Participate in training, research, and evaluation activities with the project team.
Participate effectively and in a timely manner in AAFRO’s performance review process.
Engage in ongoing professional development and training activities to meet performance needs.

Key Selection Criteria
The successful applicant will demonstrate the following key selection criteria of the role:
Qualifications
A tertiary qualification relevant to the delivery of community services (e.g., Social Work), or a strong background working within the community services sector or equivalent experience.
Essential experience and knowledge
Demonstrate abilities in working with children, young people, and families from CALD African backgrounds who are at risk, including those who have police or justice system involvement.
Understand issues affecting the needs and wellbeing of many CALD children, young people, and families, and demonstrate the ability to advocate for them.
Demonstrated ability to provide case management, intake, assessment, and program registration.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to relate well to children, young people, and their families.
Ability to work independently and autonomously, as well as collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team and in partnership with relevant local services.
Experience facilitating group and one-on-one sessions with participants with diverse needs, including experience working closely with appropriate service providers.
Demonstrated ability to manage and organise caseloads for multiple participants.
Ability to work with families and young people to identify areas of interest in Beat The Time activities and education, and facilitate Live2Learn education and support on weekends and during business hours.
Ability to complete a case support plan for individuals and families in partnership with the participant or client.
Ability to formulate options and implement holistic strategies with individuals and families who are in crisis.
Ability to promote and represent AAFRO’s vision, mission, and programs to the wider community.
Demonstrated ability to organise and lead activities suited to children and young people.

Desirable
Understanding or experience of working with people from African backgrounds and CALD communities, including those affected by crises and trauma.
Project Duration
The project duration depends on funding, and the method of delivery may be adjusted from time to time by agreement with the funding body. The Support Worker is required to adapt to these changes when they arise.
