Our Programs

The Ubuntu Framework

The philosophy of the Ubuntu Framework is built on the concepts of humanity, traditional African moral values, respect, integrity, togetherness, compassion, fairness and dignity.

We believe the Ubuntu Framework is an effective approach of providing necessary, holistic support for young people of African and culturally and linguistically diverse background at risk of offending or reoffending. We seek to build on the capacity of all young people, their families, and their communities, through Ubuntu practice.

Through Ubuntu Framework of community restorative and healing practice, AAFRO has designed and delivered various programs for young people and their families.

AAFRO in Schools

Is a program that supports young people of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds in schools to strengthen their cultural identity and address issues that some young people might be experiencing in schools such as bullying and harassment.

It is based on the Ubuntu community practice model that aims to empower young people to discover their full potential. The program targets mainly Year 8 to 10 students, who are developmentally highly susceptible to peer influence. It acts as an early intervention to prevent young people from dropping out of school and encourage them to complete year 12.

Stir It Up

Stir It Up is a program designed to support young people of CALD background, including those of African descent, by introducing them to cooking fresh food, food safety and hygiene.  More than a cooking class, it is a stepping stone designed to mentor young people to become more independent and self-sufficient, and to increase their leadership potential. The cooking environment also provides a space for young people to discuss their wellbeing and the social challenges they encounter.

Women’s Words

This program is a women’s community-driven project that is inclusive and empowers women. It is designed to address and prevent the breakdown of family and community relations and eliminate feelings of social isolation that many women of refugee and migrant background experience as they seek to rebuild their lives in a new society.

By modelling Ubuntu principles and practices, Women’s Words creates opportunities for participants to learn, practice and strengthen their knowledge and skills in order to thrive in everyday life in Australia. It provides long-term sustainability—by increasing women’s awareness of, and access to, available supports and resources in the community.
