Ubuntu Humanitarian Impact Award (UHIA)
This award is initiative from The Australian African Foundation for Retention and Opportunity (AAFRO), marking the first time the organization is recognizing other organizations or teams for their commitment to cultural responsiveness and inclusivity.
It highlights the importance of fostering environments that diversity equity, and collaboration are actively practiced, and valued. By celebrating individuals and organisations who build connections across diverse groups particularly African young people, families and those who are willing to build their knowledge and how best they could work to support CALD Africans individuals and families. The award sets a new standard and aims to inspire others to prioritize inclusivity and unity, recognizing that these values are essential for a thriving and cohesive community.
The selected winning organisation or team member will receive a free training voucher valued at $3,000 for AAFRO cultural training for up to 16 staff members from their organisation to celebrate and upskill their team. This includes from leadership level to frontline staff.
Please note that the cultural training participation must take place between 15th Feb – 30th April 2025.
Nominees in this category must have demonstrated a strong commitment with collaborating with culturally linguistics service/communities, culturally responsive, wellbeing advocates for disadvantaged communities and strong leadership in driving inclusive practice.

Not limited to: Community/ welfare services, individuals, organisations providers, business, sport clubs, health departments and government agencies.

Nominees must be registered organisation, have proven track record of working with CALD African communities or intend to work CALD Africans.
Self-nomination and third party nominations are accepted
All nominations must be fully completed and by the deadline date AAFRO chooses closing date 27th November 2024 Time 11:59PM and finalist will be inform on Friday 29th November.

Any changes to the terms and conditions will be communicated to the nominees
AAFRO will reserve the right to amend or cancel the awards at any time, including negotiate changes to the training in very unforeseen circumstances
There will be no feedback provided by AAFRO to the unsuccessful applicants of this award
Nomination can either be an individual or a team in an organisation. When an organisation nominates a team, they are required to send an individual representative to the award. If they win the award, the entire team will be included in the reward.
Before you apply, please consider that all finalists are required to attend the AAFRO event in-person on December 5th with a maximum of 2-3 nominated staff members.

Our philosophy
The Australian African Foundation for Retention and Opportunity, AAFRO Ubuntu Framework is built on the concepts of humanity, traditional African moral values, respect, integrity, togetherness, compassion, fairness, and dignity. The Framework is an approach providing necessary, holistic support for children, young people, and families of culturally and linguistically diverse background especially those of African descent.
AAFRO statement
The Australian African Foundation for Retention for Retention and Opportunity (AAFRO), has a strong history of working with vulnerable people both in the community and in the youth justice system, including families with complex needs. We have extensive experience of working with at-risk individuals and groups in difficult environments to produce good outcomes for all. We use creative ways of delivering services that often produce long-lasting and positive outcomes for individuals and the people around them.
What is it:
The training is developed to help participants gain greater cultural understanding and learn to work in a culturally responsive way when engaging with people from CALD communities, particularly those of African background.
AAFRO Ubuntu cultural Training Intended Outcomes:
Create cultural awareness / understanding when engaging, people including children, young people and families of African Australian background
Challenge assumptions/ increase cultural knowledge
Improve organisational cultural competence and develop and support staff to better ensure services and meet the needs of the community
Deepen knowledge of different cultural practices and views through the lens of AAFRO Ubuntu
Provide effective tools and clear processes for practitioners to explore the cultural needs of people of African Australian backgrounds.
